Alright friends, is there anything better than a big bowl of hot, buttery popcorn as you settle-in for an affordable and relaxing evening at home? Before you commit to three blissfully uninterrupted hours of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, how about making your binge session a bit more memorable?  Thanks to  Dairy Farmers of Canada’s recent delivery, I whipped-up a batch of Canadian Cheddar Popcorn and l was one happy coach potato. I don’t think I can ever go back to the store-bought version!

The cheese that takes your home popped popcorn from a yummy treat to an absolute show stopper is Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar. It is melts easily when grated with a microplane grater, allowing you to get the salty and tangy cheese flavour on each popcorn kernel. Coming from Cows Creamery in Prince Edward Island, this English Style Cheddar is truly Canadian-made with the milk of Holstein Cows and PEI salt air. If you can’t get your paws on Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar, opt for a drier, 12-16 month aged Canadian cheddar for similar texture.

I find popping my popcorn at home to be much more affordable than buying microwave popcorn, but I understand it is a matter of convenience! 5 years ago I bought a $10.00 air popper and buy a $2.00 bag of kernels every few months and the combo works great. There are more expensive popping options such as stove top churn poppers that get nearly every kernel. I hope to invest in one one day, but air popped is fine for me now!

Much like the store bought version of Cheddar Popcorn, things can get a bit messy. Instead of white powdery hands, this homemade treat will result in some seriously cheesy and buttery hands. Don’t fret! Have a handful of napkins or paper towel on hand for a quick clean-up. The mess is worth it!

I just love popcorn and this addition of Canadian cheese to the budget friendly, classic snack is the perfect way to make your casual night in amazing!
